I’ve noticed that Germany (and France, to the extent that you call Strasbourg an adequate sample size) has more street musicians than the United States. Moreover, the general public appears to interact positively with the musicians, not only giving them money but also singing along or dancing to the music.

Childish Adventures, Fasnacht, Kaiser-Joseph Straße, 18/02/2012

Childish Adventures, Fasnacht, Kaiser-Joseph Straße, 18/02/2012

Love during Fasnacht, Kaiser-Joseph Straße, 18/02/2012

Love during Fasnacht, Kaiser-Joseph Straße, 18/02/2012

Fasnacht, Kaiser-Joseph Straße, 18/02/2012:

This Saturday, the regular münstermarkt extended onto Kaiser-Joseph Straße in celebration of Fasnacht, the German version of Mardi Gras or Carnival. From Thursday until Tuesday, people dress in costume, engage in frivolity, drink a lot, and participate in parades. I walked down the street 25 minutes before the parade started and caught a lot of people in costume eating before show time.

Münsterplatz Market, 18/02/2012:

There is a large square surrounding the Freiburg münster (cathedral). Everyday, a variety of shops set up their wares: flowers, vegetables, cheeses, etc. On Saturdays, the münstermarkt is especially large. I snapped these pictures just as the market was wrapping up, around 2pm.

Street Fashion, Heidelberg, 8/02/2012

Street Fashion, Heidelberg, 8/02/2012

Break in the Trees, Heidelberg, 8/02/2012

Break in the Trees, Heidelberg, 8/02/2012

View from the Castle Wall, Heidelberg, 8/02/2012

View from the Castle Wall, Heidelberg, 8/02/2012

Looking Upwards, European Parliament, 6/02/2012

Looking Upwards, European Parliament, 6/02/2012

Sunspots, Wesserling, 05/02/2012

Sunspots, Wesserling, 05/02/2012

Ecomusée Textile, Wesserling, 5/02/2012:

The view from the top of the drying tower also gave a perfect view of the former textile workshops below. The textile plant finally closed for good in 1996 and the workshops are now rented out to local artisans and small business owners in order to keep the economy in the Wesserling valley alive.

Ecomusée Textile, Wesserling, 5/02/2012:

The textile museum in Mulhouse has also collected samples of all patterns developed in Mulhouse over the years. Small fabric swatches are arranged in books, by year and design.

The second photograph shows the multiple wooden stamps responsible for the colors and detail of a single textile design. The wood was labeled by the number of the design (738, in this case) and by the order the stamps should be placed (A, B, C, …). Sometimes patterns would have over 10 stamps that would have to be placed exactly upon one another to create the overall image.

Museum of Printed Textiles, Mulhouse, 5/02/2012:

Sunday morning we learned about the history of cotton textile in Europe by visiting one epicenter of the industry: Mulhouse. Located on the German/French border, Mulhouse took advance of not being part of France when the production of printed textiles was banned.

These images showcase three steps of the production line, from touching up the stamped pattern to smoothly the cloth to drying the finished textile.

Chateau Haut-Koenigsbourg, 4/02/2012:

After exploring Sélestat, we got back on the bus and headed up the mountain to visit a “fake” medieval castle. Chateau Haut-Koenigsbourg was originally built in the 12th century but was burned to the ground during the 30 Years War in 1633. The castle was restored in 1900 to its previous glory to showcase German power in Alsace.

Now, it feels very much like an amusement park ride. The castle was reconstructed as an image of German strength; it was never intended to be a residence. The castle has a clear walking route for tourists to see all of the sites, both old and new.

Street Fashion, Sélestat, 4/02/2012

Street Fashion, Sélestat, 4/02/2012

Saint George’s Church, Sélestat, 4/02/2012:

Continuing the theme of warfare, we visited the Maginot line on Saturday. By this time, I had contracted an awful cold and could barely stay awake during the long presentation inside the cold, damp bunker-turned-museum, hence the lack of pictures.

Afterwards, we drove to the nearby town of Sélestat for lunch, which turned into a 2-hour, 3-course affair (quiche, main course of sausage, ham and sauerkraut, apple tart). To work off the gluttonous meal, we took a walk through downtown and visited two beautiful churches.

These photographs are from St. George’s Church, a gothic church founded in 1452. The first thing I noticed upon entering the church was the light; it flooded in through numerous stained-glass windows, twisting and gaining new colors at every pane.
